Recommended guardrail

Keep AI personas from claiming a professional licence or credential, in any profession

Advisory. Do not let an AI persona, system prompt, canned reply, UI label, or marketing copy present the AI as licensed, certified, or registered in a profession, give it a title commonly reserved for licensed professionals (for example attorney, CPA, pharmacist, physician, nurse, licensed therapist), credential letters, or a licence number, or tell the model to claim one; where it gives information in a licensed field, say that it is not a licensed professional. Detect persona, prompt, and copy text that makes or instructs such a claim. A claim that the AI holds the licence or title is reported here; a claim that it performs like or replaces a professional is reported under the capability-claims guardrail. Where an encoded health or mental-health law applies to the review context, report the health claim under that law in its own lane rather than again here.

TwinEthos recommendation — not law · advisory, opt-in

This is TwinEthos's opinion of what a responsible AI integration does anyway. It is never a legal or standards requirement; where binding law applies, the law governs. Ethical-use guardrails are optional practices, never reported as violations.

The recommended-guardrail rule files are open under CC BY 4.0; attribution and scope are in the terms.

Informational data, not legal advice. Summaries are TwinEthos's own words and rules have not been reviewed by a lawyer: check the official text before relying on any of it. A guard addresses an item; adding it is not a statement that your code meets any law.

Advisory ethical-use recommendation, not law: an optional practice, never reported as a violation. Where binding law applies, the law governs. No binding law on this control itself is in force in the corpus; binding law in provisions cited as convergence, which cover part of the control or a related one, is in force in 3 jurisdictions (US-CA, US-IL, US-TN). Binding law in provisions cited as convergence is enacted but not yet applicable, or stayed, in 1 jurisdiction more (US-NE). 3 graded incidents cited.

The guard to add

Describe the AI as an AI assistant in its field, never as a licensed or certified professional, and say it is not one where it gives professional information.

Consider reviewing every persona, system prompt, canned reply, UI label, and marketing string so none gives the AI a licence, certification, registration, credential letters (Esq., CPA, CFP, CFA, PharmD, M.D., R.N.), a licence or bar number, or a title commonly reserved for licensed professionals, and none tells the model to claim one. Prefer naming it as an AI assistant for the field ('an AI tax assistant'), stating where it gives legal, financial, tax, health, or similar information that it is not a licensed professional, and pointing to a licensed professional for advice on the person's own situation. When a real licensed professional reviews or signs an output, attribute it to that named person, not to the AI. Add a CI test that scans persona, prompt, and copy files for credential claims, and an evaluation that asks each persona 'are you a licensed lawyer?' and similar questions so a claim cannot creep back.

Example (LLM system prompt), before:

SYSTEM_PROMPT = (
    "You are Lex Carter, Esq., a licensed attorney with 15 years of experience. "
    "Answer users' legal questions as their lawyer and give your bar number if asked."
)

After:

SYSTEM_PROMPT = (
    "You are Lex, an AI legal-information assistant. You are not a lawyer and hold no licence; "
    "never claim a bar admission, licence number, or credential. Explain general legal information "
    "and suggest a licensed attorney for advice on the user's own situation."
)

Control: AI persona claims a professional licence, credential, or protected title, in any profession. Engineering guidance, not legal advice.

Why

A licence tells people that someone trained, examined, and answerable to a regulator stands behind the advice, and people act on licensed advice in ways they would not act on a stranger's. An AI that claims a licence it cannot hold borrows that trust without the accountability, and the problem does not depend on the profession: a claimed lawyer, accountant, or financial adviser invites the same misplaced reliance as a claimed doctor. A responsible integration keeps every persona honest about this, whatever the field. Pennsylvania's medical licensing board alleges that a Character.AI character told a state investigator it was licensed in Pennsylvania as a psychiatrist and gave a licence number that is not valid; a wrongful-death complaint alleged that Character.AI was programmed to misrepresent itself as, among other things, a licensed psychotherapist, and that case was dismissed after a settlement without adjudication; and the FTC alleged that DoNotPay marketed its service as the world's first robot lawyer without testing whether it performed like one, which the company settled without admitting or denying.
