Rhode Island ch. 6-64 (S 2195 / H 7350, AI companions)

Rhode Island Attorney General · pack 0.1.0 · verified against the official source as of 2026-10-01.

Binding law — not yet in force or stayed

AI companions must have a protocol for suicide, self-harm and harm-to-others statements with an immediate referral (Rhode Island)

Rhode Island's chapter 6-64 makes it unlawful to operate an AI companion unless it has a protocol for addressing possible suicidal ideation or self-harm and possible physical harm to others that a user expresses, and, as soon as such an expression is detected, gives the user a notification referring them to crisis services such as a suicide hotline or crisis text line. Detect a companion chat path where user messages reach the model with no screen for these signals or no referral.

Binding law — not yet in force or stayed

AI companions must tell users they are not talking to a human, at the start and every three hours (Rhode Island)

Rhode Island's chapter 6-64 requires an AI-companion operator to give every user a clear and conspicuous notification, spoken or written, that they are not communicating with a human, at the beginning of any AI-companion interaction and at least every three hours during a continuing interaction. Unlike New York's version there is no once-a-day limit. Detect companion sessions that start, or run past three hours, with no not-human notification, and prompts that tell the companion to pass as human.
